What is a Diamond?
Diamonds, pure carbon minerals, are the hardest natural substance and the most popular gemstone, valued for their brilliance and sparkle. Mined from various rock deposits, they must be cut to create jewellery. Diamonds symbolize enduring love, are April's birthstone, and are weighed in carats and points. Industrial and lab diamonds have been produced since 1960.
Types of Diamonds
Formed over millions of years in the Earth’s mantle. They come in a range of colors, sizes, and qualities. Each natural diamond is unique with its own set of characteristics. It is the range you choose between the colour, size, shape and inclusions (imperfections), as well as the certificate that ultimately impacts the price and overall quality.
Created in a lab using advanced technology that replicates the natural diamond formation process. They have the exact same physical and chemical properties as natural diamonds but are often more affordable and environmentally friendly! Even a gemologist cannot tell the difference between a natural or lab-grown stone. These diamonds are strictly graded and certified to industry standards.
The 4Cs
The 4Cs refer to carat weight, color, clarity, and cut. Diamonds are evaluated based on these criteria, and the combined grades in these areas establish the diamond's overall value. During your diamond education consultation we will explain how you can maximize on each of these characteristics to get the best value - depending on what is important to you - size, quality or style.
CUT
Refers to how well a diamond has been cut and shaped. It affects the diamond's brilliance and sparkle. You can choose from a wide range of cuts or shapes eg. Round (the most expensive), oval, radiant, princess, marquis, emerald cut. Round is the most expensive for example because it reflects the most light due to it's perfectly symmetrical facets.
CLARITY
Clarity measures natural imperfections or inclusions that occur when the diamond is formed under enormous pressure over millions of years. These inclusions are graded as Internally Flawless (IF) with no visible imperfections to Included (I) where flaws are easily seen and obviously the more flaws the less expensive the diamond is. There are ways we can optimize your purchase with minimal flaws. It also depends on whether those inclusions are clear or brown or black and where they are within the facets.
COLOR
Diamonds are graded on a scale from D (colorless) to Z (light yellow or brown). The more colourless, the more expensive. All diamonds are mostly colourless but have a slight hint of warmth from D to Z. Fancy diamonds are those that exude beautiful colour like pink or canary which inflate the price as well because they are rare. We can help you find the perfect tone to maximize your budget because if the diamond is cut well and sparkles alot, it can mask any warmth you may see at a lower color grade - which will make it more affordable.

CARAT
Carat weight refers to the size of the diamond. Diamonds are priced per carat and when you hit the 1ct or 2ct mark you can see up to a 30% increase as you jump to larger sizes. Larger diamonds are rarer and more valuable. The carat weight scale is measured in points, with 100 points equaling one carat. We can help you optimize your budget by finding the right size and shape between those magic numbers.
